September 18, 2009: The Bernstein Project
Artistic Director Marin Alsop curates a season-long project celebrating the great icon of 20th-century music making, Leonard Bernstein, including more than 30 performances, talks and workshops. Find out more at
Southbank Centre.
[Bernstein] was a thinker, teacher, author, television star, provocateur, humanitarian and he was my hero. As with all true mentors, Bernstein taught me much more than a craft. He showed me--and the world--the enormous power of music and how important it is to share it with as much of humanity as is possible. He showed us that classical music is a powerful force that can transform lives as well as inspire and move people and he lived by those principles.--Marin Alsop
August 21, 2009: New Bernstein Mass CD Released
This is, handily, the best sung, best played, most intelligently interpreted recording of Mass currently available. Marin Alsop knits the whole ensemble together with infallible insight and verve.
Alsop never has made a finer recording--it's both a tribute to her mentor Leonard Bernstein, as well as to her exceptional talent as an exponent of his music.--David Hurwitz, Classics Today
